Flower Delivery to Aldwych by Clare Florist

Aldwych is a road that forms part of the Northbank business improvement district in the City of Westminster in London. It is 1 km north-east of Charing Cross, the junction of Cockspur Street, the Strand and Whitehall. What makes this road notable is its crescent shape that is connected at the Strand — a major route in the City of Westminster and part of the A4 road, on both ends. Along its entire span are buildings in various sizes and purpose.

In the 17th century, an Anglo-Saxon trading centre and village named Lundenwic was established about one mile to the west of Londinium, present day Aldwych. It is believed that residents in the village used the mouth of the River Fleet as a harbour and a spot where trading ships and fishing boats can drop their anchors.

Due to extensive excavations, Lundenwic was rediscovered in the 1980s. Following this is the move of Londinium within the old Roman Walls, and then the older settlement of Lundenwic was given the name ealdwic.

In 1211, Aldwych was referred to as Aldewich, but the new name, which was derived from the Old English words eald and wic that meant old trading town, stuck to this day. It was in the early 20th century when the modern street was redeveloped.

Although the present Aldwych is a picture of great progress, it had its share of bad images. It was on 18 February 1996 when Edward O’Brien, an IRA operative, was transporting a bomb on a London bus when it prematurely detonated, killing him and inuring four other people.

Aldwych Theatre - A West End theatre in the City of Westminster, the Aldwych Theatre was a built as a partner to the Waldorf Theatre, which is now known as the Novello Theatre. It opened on 23 December 1905 and, on 20 July 1971 was listed Grade II. It boasts of a seating capacity of 1,200.

Novello Theatre - Think of this as the better half of Aldwych Theatre that was built on the other side of the Waldorf Hilton. It opened on 22 May 1905. Its original name Waldorf Theatre underwent a series of changes — Strand Theatre (1909), Whitney Theatre (1911), Strand Theatre again (1913) and Novello Theatre (2005).

Bush House - This is a building that is 13 years in the making. That is, sections of it were completed and opened in different years. The Centre Block, for example, was completed in 1923, while the South-West Wing in 1935. It served as a home to the BCC World Service broadcast for 70 years.

Aldwych Tube Station - Despite being the only station on the Piccadilly line branch from Holborn, the station suffered with low passenger numbers, which caused its closure in 1994. At that time, the lifts needed replacing, but the income generated is so low that the only viable solution is to have it closed. The station played a significant role during the World Wars, as it served as the storage space of artworks from public galleries and museum in London.
