Flower Delivery to Rhu with Clare Florist
Rhu is a village located on the eastern shores of the sea loch Gare Loch in Scotland. It’s located in the Argyle and Bute council region. This region was popularized by the 1963 From Russia with Love James Bond film that had many filming locations around Argyle and Bute. This is the largest administrative area of Scotland.
Rhu is close to Helensburgh, which is in the southeast, and also officially located in Argyle and Bute.
Rhu in Gaelic is An Rhuba and means “point”. Originally it was spelled Row, but too many people had trouble pronouncing the name correctly, so it became “Rhu” in the 1920’s.
The village has the Rhu and Shandon Parish Church, with an extremely tall bell tower that is double its height. This church was built around 1851. It was built over another church that used to be in its spot. There is a graveyard off to the side. Known people to be buried here include Henry Bell.
There was some controversy over the teachings of the church in 1831. This was known as the “Row Heresy”. John McLeod Campbell was a Church of Scotland Minister who decided to make up his own doctrines. This contravened the teachings of the Westminster Confession of Faith. He was booted out of the ministry in 1831.
Henry Bell was a ship’s engineer responsible for making The Comet, the world’s first commercially viable steam ship. In the same year the church was built, 1851, Robert Napier built a statue to commemorate Henry Bell’s grave. Napier was also a marine engineer who worked for Clyde Shipbuilding.
In the 19th century Rhu was a popular area where wealthy shipowners and merchants from Glasgow would reside. Many other settlements around this region were also popular with the wealthy.
Rhu is a popular spot for yachting on the sea due to its “point”. Another point nearby is the Rhu Narrows near the mouth of Gare Loch. Apparently the locals used to call it the spit, as you used to be able to stand on one side and spit to the other. Groynes have been built to prevent beach erosion.
Like many villages, Rhu enjoys watching their local Rhu Amateur Football Club play. The team was formed in 1896, and have continued playing to this day. The first game they ever played has been recorded as with Garelochead on January 1, 1896. The team won the Scottish Amateur Cup in 1967.
There have also been famous footballers who were born in this region. Peter McNeil was a Scottish footballer who lived from 1854 to 1901. He and his brother Moses founded the Glasgow Rangers Football Club, along with friend Peter Campbell. Moses lived until 1938.
