Flower Delivery to Riseley with Clare Florist
Riseley is a tiny village of 1300 people, located in the southeastern county of north Bedfordshire. Riseley is also a civil parish. It’s had some variations in name spellings over the years, including Risely, Rislau, Riseleg, and Riselai, but Riseley is the modern spelling. Riseley is closest to the villages of Bletsoe, Keysoe and Sharnbrock. The nearest town is in Rushden in Northamptonshire, about twelve kilometres to the northwest. Bedford is located to the south. The river Ouse passes through the village, but is better known as the Brook.
Riseley was built during the medieval times. The Domesday Book of 1086 has its name listed as Riselai, and was listed in the Stodden Hundred. Back then there were only twenty-five households in the village, which was considered large back then. Godric the Sheriff oversaw the village. It’s believed he died in the Battle of Hastings.
In 1279, the Knights Hospitallers owned the land and manors in the village and some of the surrounding lands. This included Harvies Manor and Manor of Lawrence, which had previously been owned by the Lawrence family. The Knight also possessed free warren rights for hunting in the region.
The Knights Templar has some history in this regionThis is evidenced by a record found of Walter de Riseley holding 4 hides of land in Riseley of the Knights Templar.
It’s believed that some of the history has been mixed up between the Hospitaliers and the Templars over the years.
In 1351 Riseley had great losses from the Black Death. There were 300 acres of farm land that were lost, as there was no one alive to work them.
Riseley has been a village noted for its brick and tile making as it has a rich clay soil. History dates this brick production back to 1558. There is a record of twelve brickmakers living in the village as of the 1841 census. By 1851, there were 15 brickmakers living there.
Riseley does have a small police station, a shop, and a garage. There are many green spaces for the residents to enjoy. There is a village playing field where the Riseley sports football club and the cricket club plays. There is also a village hall for gatherings. The village is surrounded by many green spaces, and a nearby woods, and a rose meadow. There are many footpaths that pedestrians can enjoy.
There is only one church in the village, the All Saints Riseley. The church still contains an old section from the 12th century. This church used to be owned by the Knights Hospitaliers. There is also an old Methodist chapel from 1810, but it’s not being used any more, along with some other chapels.
Riseley is host to a yearly Marvellous music festival in July. Last year there was a Foo Fighters Tribute. This year it’s held on July 25th to 26th.
