HISTORY
The first recorded listing of the Sutton is in the Domesday Book. A castle once existed in town and was built in 1220, however the only thing that remains from it is the oval motte. The location of the castle is quite unusual as well as it's a long way from the village and church.
In the 14th century, the manor of Sutton was held by John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster and son of King Edward III. Although nothing remains, it is said that the moat located near the John O'Gaunt Gold Club in Sutton Park is the site of his manor house. That said, there is a present-day house. The large earthen mound on its north side is said to be the original house.
General John Burgoyne, a British army officer, politician and dramatist notable for his role in the American War of Independence, was born in Sutton. Sutton Park, which is now the John O'Gaunt Golf Club, was their home.
