Thurleigh is a civil parish and village located in north Bedfordshire, England, particularly about 51 miles north of London. For young and older tourists alike, the place offers some interesting attractions and activities that they can definitely enjoy. You can go on a holiday, perhaps with a group or a special someone. If it is the latter that you are planning, make it more special and order flowers for delivery to Thurleigh.

History

Evidence found by excavations implicate that Thurleigh was occupied in the Saxon, Roman and Iron-Age periods. The village is referred to as LaLega in the “Domesday Book” in 1086, and then Thyrleye by 1372. In 1813, it was recorded as a deanery of Eaton and part of the Hundred of Willey. The current church here has some parts that still date from around 1150, which is about the same time the Thurleigh Castle was built.

Landmarks/Attractions

Thurleigh is home to historical sites and listed buildings that holidaymakers from any part of the globe would enjoy exploring aside of course, from beautiful Thurleigh flowers all around. These include the following:

·    The Parish Church of Saint Peter

This is a grade II listed building that approximately dates back to 1130, with additions made in the 14th and 15th centuries and restorations in the 1880s. Its former vicarage was completed in 1750 for priest Robert Lerogne.

·    The Thurleigh Castle

This was a medieval motte-and-bailey and timber castle, of which only the earthworks, and three fish ponds, survive today. Its site, which is described as the Bury Hill Camp, is now a scheduled monument that is protected by law. The motte is notable in a way that it has a top platform on 2 levels, and the exceptionally large bailey is also unusual in its form.

·    The USAAF Memorial

This was an airfield known as RAF Thurleigh that was constructed during the Second World War. Originally, it was used as training facility for both RAF and Polish personnel, but was turned over to the USAAF in 1942. Now, it is a memorial site to those men. In addition to the USAAF Memorial, there is also a War Memorial near the church for the village men who gave their lives during the 2 world wars.

·    The Thurleigh Windmill Tower

Made of red brick and partly rendered cement, this tower mill was constructed in about 1890 for cereal processing. This structure was last worked in 1917 and had been derelict for about a century now. Still, it’s worth a visit especially if want to view some wonderful flowers in Thurleigh.

Events

The people of Thurleigh hold regular events at the church, village hall, the Playing Field Club and the Jackal, the only pub in the village. The playing field is used for football and cricket, with the Playing Field Club providing changing rooms for the cricket team. Aside from these, there are also community events that you can join here.
