Whipsnade Flowers Are Always An Ideal Gift
Located in Bedfordshire, Whipsnade is a minor village and a civil parish. It is found on the eastward section of the Chiltern Hills, and can be found around 2 and a half miles from the south/south-west of Dunstable. One of the most notable attractions in Whipsnade is the Whipsnade Tree Cathedral but of course, the Whipsnade Zoo is an attraction that is known all across the country.
Technically, Whipsnade Zoo is actually located in Dagnall, a neighbouring area, but given its importance in the local community, it is understandable that Whipsnade residents are very proud of the zoo and the surrounding industry.
The park covers an area of around 600 acres, close to 2.4km2, and it is easily seen from the air and from the north because of the White Lion. This has been carved on to the Dunstable Downs, which forms part of the Chiltern Hills, and it is located beneath the enclosure for white Rhinos. Due to the large expanse of the park, it is possible to walk, use the bus service of the zoo or drive around in your own car between the different enclosures. There is also an enclosure where animals are allowed to roam freely. Another transport option, and one that is immensely popular is the Jumbo Express, the train service in the zoo.
Whipsnade Zoo is regarded as being one of the biggest wildlife conservation parks in the whole of Europe. The Zoo plays host to close to 3,000 animals, a great number of which would be considered as being endangered if they were still in the wild. The majority of animals maintained in the zoo are held within enclosures which are deemed to be sizable while some animals such as peacocks and wallabies are able to roam freely around the park.
While the zoo is an integral part of life in Whipsnade, there is clearly more to life in the area, and there is a population of close to 500 in the village. There is also the Whipsnade Park Golf Club, a well-known attraction that welcomes a considerable number of people to the area, further boosting the local economy. In addition to the zoo, there is also a miniature nature reserve found in the northern section of the village, at Sallowsprings. This is managed by a local Wildlife Trust and is a popular hit with local schools, children and touring parties.
In the area you will find a hill figure that has been shaped to look like a lion, and it was originally made for the zoo. An interesting piece of local history revolves around the chalk lion on Bison Hill during the Second World War. This is due to the fact that the chalk lion was covered by a black sheet. This was down to ensure that the landmark was not visible to German bombers. Minimising the number of landmarks that were provided to invading forces was a crucial part of the home campaign during WWII and the local authorities in Whipsnade decided that it was best to keep the lion under wraps until peace time.
