Flower Delivery to Woburn with Clare Florist
Woburn, with a population of close to 1,000 people, is a village, and a civil parish, which is located in Bedfordshire. It is found around 5 miles to the south-east of the heart of Milton Keynes, and the village is handily located next to the M1. Woburn lies around 3 miles from Junction 13, making it a great location for people who do a considerable amount of travelling on this road. There are also a number of tourist attractions in the local area, which makes the availability of a main road a huge asset to the local community.
The first recording of Woburn came back in 969, and it was recognised as a Hamlet. There is also a recording of Woburn in the Domesday Book, which was published in 1086. The area is predominantly known for Woburn Abbey, a fine stately home, which was initiated back in 1145 by the Cistercian Monks. After the monasteries were dissolved, the Abbey was gifted to the Early of Bedford in 1538. In historical times, in order to differentiate between the Abbey and the local area, the village was referred to as Woburne Chapell. In its history, Woburn has been burned down three times, the first time occurring due to a chimney fire, which spread quickly due to homes being built in close proximity and the thatched roofs, which were popular at the time. There was a fire during the Civil War, when the Cavaliers burned down the majority of the village, and in the 1700s, a third fire engulfed the village. This was the catalyst for rebuilding the town in a Georgian style, and this is a style that remains prominent today.
The area was considered to be a staging post on the network of coach travel around the world. In the 1800s, Woburn was recognised as having 27 inns and a post office which was open 24 hours a day. This was the first time that such a post office was available outside of London. The development of the area was harmed by the fact that Woburn lost out to Woburn Sands with respect to getting a railway station. This saw many people leave the area and in a hundred years, from 1851 onwards, the population shrunk from over 2,100 to around 700. The population of modern day Woburn has rebounded slightly, but it is nowhere near the level Woburn was at, at its peak.
The modern day Woburn is a residential village with a strong focus on tourist attractions. Alongside the ever popular Woburn Abbey, the Woburn Safari Park is a big attraction for many people. There is a Heritage Centre and a Georgian Centre, providing an insight into the history of the area. There is an annual Village Festival and in the Spring, there is a festival focusing on local art. Year round entertainment activities focus on a heated outdoor swimming pool while there is a monthly Farmers Market which takes place on the third Sunday of every month. This event is organised by the local traders, and again, it is a great draw for tourists who can access the resort easily by car.
