HISTORY OF WOBURN SANDS
The Iron Age marks the earliest evidence of settlement area as a hill fort from the era is located to the south-west of town.
It became part of the parish of Wavendon when it was developed into a hamlet. It became a separate civil parish in 1907. Woburn Sands became a town in its own right under the Local Government Act 1972.
Hogsty End was the original name for the village. It was one of the four “ends” of Wavendon, the others being Church End, Cross End and Lower End. However, the name fell out of favour during the Victorian times.
A local story says that a schoolmaster was unable to attract students to his Hogsty End Academy which prompted the name change.
The name the village uses now – Woburn Sands – is related to Woburn in Bedfordshire. It's sandy soil is also a result of being close to the Greenland Ridge, which is an escarpment of Greensand.
