Caversham is a large suburb in Reading, Berkshire, located in the southeastern portion of England. There are about 24,000 people living in the village, and it’s right on the northern bank of the River Thames. Reading is on the opposite bank of the village. Pedestrians can cross the pedestrian-only bridge of Caversham Lock to Reading. Vehicles may cross on Caversham Bridge, Reading Bridge, or Sonning Bridge.
Caversham is located along the River Thames and goes all the way up to the south of the Chilterns. It consists of the neighbourhoods of Emmer Green, Caversham Park Village, Lower Caversham, and Caversham Heights.
Caversham and Emmer Green were formed in the past, but most of the rest of the village was built during the 20th century.
Caversham was built during medieval times. There are still the remnants of a medieval house at Caversham Court. The site also has an herb garden and a park full of trees. These are open to the public without an admission fee. Visitors can also stroll along the Caversham Lakes and the Thames Path National Trail. The Trail first opened in 1996 and its follows the River Thames from Kemble to London, being nearly 300 kilometres long. People may walk or cycle it.
In 1066 the village was recorded as Caveham. In the Domesday book of 1086, it was recorded as Cavesham. The community had a large amount of farm lands during this time.
Around 1106, a Shrine of Our Lady was established. Today, it’s uncertain where it was, though it may have been near the current St. Peter’s Church. This shrine was a popular pilgrimage destination. In the 15th century the shrine was silver plated. Travellers could also visit the chapel of St. Anne which was on the bridge, and the well of St. Anne. Its waters were thought to have healing qualities.
By 1538, the shrine was destroyed on the order of Henry VIII. Today, the well still exists, but no water remains. It’s covered by a protective wall and a domed iron grill. A new shrine to Our Lady was built at the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady and St. Anne.
The village is host to many festivals in the summer, including the Readipop Music Festival, also known as the Caversham Festival. The Reading Music Festival is also a popular community event.
Caversham has its own minor league youth football clubs, including the Caversham AFC Colts and the Caversham AFC Cobras. They play on the Clayfield Copse, also known as the Swan’s Lair, because the team mascot is a swan. There is also the Albert Recreation Ground where tennis, croquet and bowling can be enjoyed.
