What's the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the name “Newbury?” More likely than not, you immediately think of the Newbury Racecourse, which is one of the most popular attractions in the area and has become its landmark. But what you have to realise is that there's more to Newbury than its popular racecourse; if you look closer, you'll see that this small town in the middle of Berkshire a fantastic place to visit if you want to take a break from the noise, pollution, and hassle of the big city.

Taking a Look at Newbury's Past

Archaeological experts believe that there has been a settlement at Newbury since the Mesolithic times due to the artefacts that have been recovered in the area. The borough was not mentioned by name in the Domesday Book, but it was believed to be a part of the manor of Ulvritone which, according to the Book, had 12 ploughs, a couple of mills, woodland, and private parks.

The town was founded in the latter part of the 11th century after the Norman conquest, and its name — which means “new borough” — reflects this fact. Over the years, the town grew mainly because of the cloth trade and even produced the rich and influential cloth merchant John Winchcombe II (aka Jack of Newbury).

The town became impoverished in the late 16th century when the cloth trade was disrupted during the English civil war, but it later recovered when Bath became popular as a summer destination in the 18th century. Since Newbury was halfway between London and Bath, it made sense for Londoners to make a stopover in the town during their journey, and it soon had a vibrant economy due to the coaching inns and horse stables that propped up.

The coaching trade in Newbury died when the Great Western Railway was put up. Fortunately, its economy soon revived when Vodafone UK chose to put their headquarters in the town, which soon became known as a centre for technology businesses.
