Flower Delivery to Spencers Wood, Berkshire
In the civil parish of Shinfield, Berkshire, England is the village of Spencers Wood. It is bound by the village of reading to the south, the village of Three Mile Cross to the north and the village of Grazeley to the west.
Spencers Wood derived its name from the Le Despencer family, a Norman family from the 13th century. The village was part of the Royal Forest until about 1300. Spencers Wood was initially part of Wiltshire but became part of Berkshire on 20 October 1844. Spencers Wood rapidly developed into a thriving village by 1880 with a population of 600 of which there where about 200 children. Most of the men worked in the fields or were in domestic service. In 1908, the local school was opened as well as the consecration of the Church of St Michael and All Angels.
Spencers Wood, was unaffected by the Blitz of the Second World War. Few German bombs fell in the area which made the village have no need for air-raid shelters. Food was grown and caught locally and the black market supplied more than was needed hence rationing had little effect on the majority of villagers. The war impacted the village through the influx of people. In 1939, two coaches carrying evacuees arrived the village. The village hall served as the Local Defense Volunteers headquarters. There were frequent defense troops passing through the village’s Basingstoke Road which led to Aldershot. Many soldiers, evacuees and war prisoners decided to settle in Spencers Wood after the war.
After the war, the village began to gradually develop with the installation of its street lighting. Spencers Wood Women institute was formed in 1954, although quite successful, it closed in the mid-1980’s. In the 1960’s, the M4 Motorway was built and was a barrier with reading. Roads leading to of Grazeley village were severed by the A33 Swallowfield Bypass in the 1980’s. In recent years there has been construction of many new houses despite opposition from locals.
ATTRACTIONS
Double’s Garage
On Basingstoke Road is a petrol station and car mechanic called Double’s Garage which is a family owned business which has be operational for over 100 years. The business started out as a blacksmith and farrier in The Square, the villages' centre. The original site still stands although two modern houses are to be built over it soon.
The Farriers' Arms
Farriers’ Arms is the villages' local pub. It was initially called The Cygnet when it was purchased by the owner of The Swan (a neighboring pub in Three Mile Cross). It was a popular stopover for coaches on their way to the south coast, so much that reservations where made. It is a very old business, although a beer house originally. After the First World War, it was granted a full license. It has recently expanded to incorporate two nearby adjacent cottages, which make it significantly larger than the original beer house.
