HISTORY

The Yattendon Hoard, a collection of Bronze Age implements discovered in 1878 during the excavation of the Yattendon Court foundations, serves as the earliest evidence of human occupation in town.

Known through various names throughout its history - Etingedene, Hetingedon, Gettendon, Yetingeden, Jetingedon, Watingeden and Chetingdon – Yattendon eventually settled on its current name from the 1240s onward.

The village of Yattendon appears in the Domesday Survey of 1086 when a Saxon called Baldwin held the manor during the time of Edward the Confessor. It had since been given to William FitzAnsculf, a Norman knight, who rented it to someone called Godbold.

By 1258, Peter de Yattendon serves as lord of the manor and he established a market in the village every Tuesday, as well as a three-day Christmas Fair each year. The famous De La Beche family purchased the manor in 1316 and added a Summer Fair to the calendar. The family died out by 1381.

Rose de Montfort, heiress of the Yattendon family, established rights to the manor in 1414. Her grandson-in-law, Sir Richard Merbrooke, was the one who lived in town. His daughter and heiress, Alice, married Sir John Norreys (who became King Henry VI's Master of the Wardrobe) of the great Norreys family. As a result, she brought the estate in to the hands of the Norreys.

The heirs to the Norreys were the Bertie Earles of Abingdon. But by 1876, the manor was purchased by Alfred Waterhouse, a famous architect who built the Natural History Museum.
