Flower Delivery to Rayne, Essex with Clare Florist
Rayne is a village in the Braintree district of Essex that is located in Stane Street, a Roman Road that is about two miles to the west of the nearest town of Braintree. The stream called Pod's Brook passes through the village rises in Bardfield, which then becomes the River Brain at Braintree. The same body of water is likely to have given life to plenty of flowers in Rayne.
A booklet titled "Rayne ~ From early times to the present day" was published in 1977 by the local Workers Education Association that holds an account about the village' past and present. It mentioned about a barn that used to exist, the Clap Bridge, the Lido complex, and an old railway track.
The name Rayne has several possible derivations. Hraegene, an old Saxon word that means shelter hut or eminence; Regen, an old word that means river; Roger de Ramis or Raimes, the name of the Lord of the Manor that was mentioned in the Domesday Book; and Rey, the name that signifies ‘river’, and nes that translates to ‘near’. Rey and nes then becomes 'near the river'.
There was a Bronze Age settlement in the village, which remains can now be seen in Felsted School and Colchester Castle Museum. After the Roman invasion of Britain, the road now known as A.120 linked St Albans with Colchester that led to a great development. During the 16th century, life in the village revolved around the three manor houses — Rayne Hall, Old Hall and Haverings. The Act of Settlement (1701) marked the beginning of the 18th century. It also secured the Protestant succession for the British crown. By 1800, almost all the lines are in the hands of farmers, and the 19th century marks the rapid growth of Agriculture.
A dominant feature of Rayne is the All Saints Parish Church, which was founded by Robert de Welles, Lord of the Manor of Rayne Hall, in 1199. It featured a fine oak roof and the nave and chancel that were made of flint. It was ruined at some point, but was restored in 1975/76. The nave and chancel were redecorated, the roof, windows and gutters were overhauled and the wiring was renewed. During the medieval times, it was known for healing miracles, including making infertile women pregnant after they visited the church. Apart from memorials made of cast iron, the churchyard also has Rayne flowers here and there.
Rayne is home to several places of interest, including a pub called The Swan, a playing field, war memorial, a village hall that is overlooking the playing field, and a small airfield. The old manor house of Rayne Hall was the home of the Capel family for a very long time. They later became Earls of Essex. Together with the Old Hall and a previous Rectory, they make up the historical landmarks in the village.
The Rayne Station Centre of the Flitch Way Country Park, a linear park, was formerly the Rayne Railway Station that closed in 1952. There is also the National Cycle Network route No. 16 that was developed to encourage cycling throughout Britain and for bicycle touring.
