HISTORY

The original location of Bourne End is quite different from its current location. Today, it's located half a mile downstream on the River Thames.

The history of Bourne End's name is in reference to the end of the river – with bourne being the Old English term for “river.” Plus, the mouth of the River Wye is where its name is derived from.

The hamlet appears as “Born end” in the 1722 map of Buckinghamshire by Morden. Another derivative spelling of the town's name was “Bone End” because of local mispronunciation. This then became the spelling used in official maps and documents. However, this was reversed in the 19th century by the vicar of Wooburn.

Bourne End was a hamlet of Wooburn parish in the early 19th century, together with Spring Gardens, Eghams Green, Cores End and Heavens Lea. However, this changed because of the emergence of Wycombe Railway Company in 1846. This created more travel opportunities and the locals benefited from it. As a result, Bourne End grew.

Enid Blyton and Edgar Wallace, two figures of the literary world, moved to Bourne End.
