Flower Delivery to Barrington with Clare Florist
Overlooking the River Rhee, Barrington lies eight miles southwest of Cambridge. It is a semi-rural parish that spans 2,282 acres and has a population of about 1,000.
HISTORY
The history of Barrington can be traced back over 100,000 years ago, even before the last Ice Age. Bones found in 1879 and 1948 revealed that bear, bison, deer, elephant, hippo, hyena, lion and rhino existed in the town.
Finds like polished stone axes suggested that a settlement occupied the town during the Stone Age. Arrow heads and a small burial mound from the Bronze Age have also been found.
A large settlement, which was well-defended with ditches, developed during the end of the Iron Age. There was also evidence of contacts with other parts of Europe with the finding of a pottery bowl imported from Europe.
The remains of a Roman villa that was burnt down has also been unearthed in the South of the Village. Remains were also found by the river.
Two Anglo-Saxon burial sites have been excavated in the 19th century, and a lot more in recent times.
The town was spread between five main owners before the Normans came. It is recorded in the Domesday Book that the town had 54 households.
Barrington was a prosperous village, but when the plague struck England in 1348, a number of villages fell to the disease.
A high employment was experienced starting 1863 thanks to the mining of coprolites, which can be turned into fertiliser. However, poverty crept in again.
The early 20th century brought some employment. Electricity was introduced in 1937, clean piped water supply in 1955 and drainage and sewerage between 1969 and 1972.
Today, the town has a shop/post office which they have been able to retain.
