Flower Delivery to Haslingfield, Cambridgeshire
Haslingfield is a village located in South Cambridgeshire, on the eastern side of England. It’s close to Cambridge, about ten kilometres southwest, and located between Harston, Barton, and Barrington. According to the 2001 census, about 1550 residents lived in 621 households. The High Street and New Road connect most of the village’s amenities together in one circle. These two streets form a circle around the old Manor House. Farming, particularly fruit, has been the main economy of the town, with a short period of mining for coprolite, which is used for fertilizer, during the 19th century.
The All Saints Church has a square tower, and was consecrated in 1352. The chancel walls were originally built in the 12th century, with most of the church built in the 14th. There used to be a chapel on White Hill, but all evidence of it is gone now.
The name Haslingfield appears as “Haslingefeld” in the Domesday book (1086). “Feld” means “field”, and Haeslingas was likely a band of people living here during this time. It’s listed as having 400 people in 1086. There is evidence that people have lived in that region dating back 3000 years. In the 1870s, an Anglo Saxon grave was excavated on Cantelupe Road.
Haslingfield Manor was listed at English Heritage in 1962. It was formerly known as the Manor House, and was built in Tudor style. It’s believed to have been built mid-16th century, with additions in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. It’s built of mostly brick, and a slate roof. The house was built by Thomas Wendy, who was Henry VIII’s physician, and Lord of the Manor. He died in 1673. Most of the house was demolished in the 19th century, but some portions remain. One wing of the house is left, and has been restored and carefully maintained. The original fireplace and staircase were saved and moved to Bourn Hall, Bourn, Cambridgeshire. Other materials were recycled and used on The Maltings in the High Street, and Cantelupe Farmhouse.
In 1564, Queen Elizabeth stayed at the Manor. She lost a ring, and this resulted in many ring hunts during that time. There continue to be ring hunts, but mostly just for fun now.
Haslingfield Village residents enjoy many activities and festivals during the summer season. In July is the Strawberry Fayre, held at the Haslingfield Methodist Church, in their gardens. Funds go towards charity. There are plenty of fun and games, and plenty of food. The grounds are decorated with flowers, scarecrows, and banners.
