Llandaff North is a community that’s located in the capital city of Cardiff, in the country of Wales. It’s situated in the northern portion of Cardiff. It’s located above Llandaff community on the map. Between the two wards, the population was over 9000 people in the 2011 census. It contains a large amount of residential housing, and is bordered on the south by the River Taff, with Llandaff on the other side. A bridge links both communities together.
Both Llandaff, and Llandaff North were incorporated into the city of Cardiff in 1922. in 2007, the community had a dip in the population, down to 7,778, before rising back up again.
In Welsh, Llandaff North is “Ystum Taf”. This means “a bend in the River Taff”.
In 1990, when the government introduced the community charge, or poll tax, parts of Llandaff, including the Gabalfa Estate and the Mynachdy Housing Estate, both became parts of Llandaff North electoral ward.
Llandaff North is a quiet little residential community but it does have several village shops for residents and tourists.
The community enjoys many outdoor activities, including the Llandaff Rowing Club. This club was formed in 1946, and they have their activities on the River Taff. There is also the Llandaff North RFC, who won first place in the league in the 2007/08 season.
The Llandaff Cathedral can be seen from the location of the Rowing Club. It’s only one of two cathedrals in the entire Cardiff region. Over the centuries the church has suffered from a variety of disasters, but support has been rallied to do restorations and renovations. It’s an Anglican church that was built starting in 1120, and not finished until the 12th century, to replace another one on the site. The church is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, and the three Welsh Saints: Dyfrig, Teilo, and Euddogwy. The church had suffered great damage during the Great Storm of 1703, and by 1720, the southwest tower was in ruins. In 1734, a new cathedral was built, but never officially completed. Today, only a few stones remain of this rebuild. By the 19th century, considerable work began on restoring the cathedral. The tower was completely rebuilt, and the spire added. It suffered further damage in 1941, during WWII, and was restored, and reopened in 1958. In 2007, its organ was damaged beyond repair, and a fundraiser began to replace it.
Llandaff North has several different schools, ranging from primary up to high school. The Llandaff North Community Centre is a location where residents can gather for a variety of meetings and clubs. Old Aged Pensioner’s Bingo is a popular past time for older residents. The community also has the Llandaff North Library.
The Llandaff railway station moves people between the northbound and southbound regions of Cardiff city. There is also Cardiff bus services, and a road that links to the M4 J32 Cardiff North road.
