Dryslwyn is a hamlet in the community of Llangathen, located in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It belongs to the town of Carmarthen, which is located at the northern part of the mouth of River Towy in Carmarthen Bay. It is also the home for Dryslwyn Castle, a must-see ruins for tourists and locals.
Carmarthenshire is the largest of the thirteen historical counties in Wales and a popular destination for visitors and lovers looking to explore historical sites and castles built centuries ago. Are you planning to propose to your girl on your upcoming holiday to Wales? Certainly, some Dryslwyn flowers will make the occasion more romantic.
History
Dryslwyn Castle is located on top of a hill in between Carmarthen and Llandelio. It was said to be built in the 1220s by the Princes of Deheubarth, the kingdom in southwest Wales. It has survived several exchanges of hands including Rhys ap Maredudd, a Welsh lord captured and executed in 1292. In 1403, the castle was seized by Owain Glyndwr and in the 1500s, demolition of the structure was started to prevent any more rebels from occupying it.
Carmarthen, on the other hand, claims to be the oldest town in Wales and was regarded as the “chief citie of the country”, by William Camden whilst Carmarthenshire is considered the “Garden of Wales” because of its fertile land and abundant produce.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
Golden Grove - This is an estate wherein three mansions have already been built one after the other. The first one was owned by the Vaughan family and built in 1560. After it burned down, a second structure was built. And when it was given to John Frederick Campbell, he had it replaced with a mansion which is still what visitors get to see these days.
National Botanic Garden in Wales - This 586-acre parkland boasts of horticultural displays, lakes and flowery meadows. In the heart of the vast land is a Glass House with Mediterranean landscape and a six-metre deep ravine. The botanic garden also has a Japanese garden as well as a theatre which shows a film about the plant world.
Talley Abbey Ruins - This is once a monastery which lies in the River Coti valley. By the mid-14th century, there were about 1,300 monasteries for men and 400 for women. The Talley Abbey was built by Rhys ap Gruffydd. It is now surrounded by steep wooded hills.
Kidwelley Castle - Overlooking the River Gwendraeth, this well-preserved castle existed in the medieval times and was said to have existed since 1422. One of the most prominent features that still remained are the arches which might have been used as hiding areas for soldiers of the castle as they try to defend it from invaders.
Dolaucothi Gold Mines - The informative and best way to experience this tourist attraction is through a guided tour to the site. Here, tourists will be introduced to the mining methods used by the Romans 2,000 years ago and continued up to the 1930s.
