History

In 1870 and 1872, Myddfai was described as a sub-district and parish in the district of Llandovery, Carmenthen. While there is not much to make out of the origin of its name, Mothvey or Myddfai was said to have been visited often by physicians in the 13th century and that there was a compilation of herbal remedies for ailments of all sorts. A famous legend was that of the young man who fell in love with a lady who lived in the glacial lake of Llyn y Fan Fach. The lady told the lad that if he marries her, he will be rich but he was not to hit her more than three times. However, the man failed and she went back into the lake along with all the animals. She showed herself to their sons and taught them about making herbal medicines to heal different forms of illness. According to the legend, they were called ‘Physicians of Myddfai’.
