History

After the Norman army conquered nearby Ceredigion, a castle was built by Robert Montgomery in 1093. Eventually, a walled settlement developed around the castle and the Normans were ultimately defeated. By 1199, the town received its first charter and established itself as an important trade centre.

Cardigan was just a small, walled town with little river traffic, but that changed in the 16th century. That was when Wales was formally annexed by England through the Laws in Wales Acts 1535-1542. This gave political and domestic stability in the town, as well as economic prosperity.

By the 18th and early 19th century, Cardigan was an important seaport in South Wales. It also has a thriving shipbuilding industry. Craftsmen and rural industries were also important part of life in town.

However, the port business became inactive by the early part of the 20th century due in part to the river silting up.
