Flower Delivery to Saighton, Cheshire with Clare Florist
Saighton is a village located in west Cheshire, on the northwest side of England. Saighton used to be considered a township in the ancient parish of St. Oswald’s until 1866, before becoming a civil parish. The civil parish is composed of a chairman and seven members. The town is very small, with only 202 people being listed in the 2011 census.
The old village manor currently belongs to the Duke of Westminster. The main residence is known as Saighton Grange.
In 1870 to 1872, the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales mentioned Saighton’s features. Besides being listed in St. Oswald’s Parish, it was 1.5 miles (sic) southwest of Waverton and 4 miles south southeast of Chester. The town contained one post office, with a population of 272, and 59 houses. The manor belonged to the Marquis of Westminster. Saighton Hall was occuped by a T. Smith, Esq.
From 1938 to 1939, Saighton was home to a military training camp for WWII. It was located on over 3 hectares of land. It started as a basic training camp, and then in 1940 it became a training ground for the use of anti-aircraft weapons. It then became the primary training centre for the 233 Light Anti-Aircraft Training Regiment of the Royal Artillery.
In 1949, it turned into a Training Centre No. 12 for the Royal Pioneer Corps. For the 50s and 60s it was used by the Royal Signals Corps. It passed through some other groups until the 70s. After the 1970s it was using as a medical training facility. Today, it’s being proposed for a mixed-use development which will tie a new road to the A55.
In 1881 the town had a thriving population of 350 people due to agriculture. Many of the women living in the town were servants who worked at the Manor or other homes. Other occupations in town included general labourers and domestic services.
St. Mary’s Parish Church is located in a small settlement called Bruera between Saighton and Aldford. It’s a Grade II listed building. It was originally built around Norman times, with some remaining elements. Major alterations occurred in 1896. It’s connected with other churches in surrounding villages such as St. Peter in Waverton, and St. John the Baptist in Aldford.
There is the Saighton School which is a church school located on Saighton Lane. The students attend the church services and events that occur throughout the year. The clergy from St. Mary’s Church also visits the school regularly. There is an “Open the Book” worship session every Tuesday. The school also believes in promoting Fair Trade products. They organize many events and sell goods and have activities to raise funds for a chosen charity.
