A village and civil parish in Cornwall, Germoe has a main settlement that is about 5 miles west of Helston and 7 miles east of Penzance. The settlements in this church town include Boscreege, Balwest and Tresowes Green.

The population of Germoe was 508 in 2001, which increased to 549 in 2011. The parish is rural in character and was once associated with mining, particularly the geological formation to its north border known as the Tregonning-Godolphin Granite—one of the 5 granite batholiths in Cornwall. The area was formerly an important source of copper and tin ore.

The town also boasts of the Tregonning Hill, which is the site of the Germoe war memorial.

History

The parish town is named after Saint Germocus, who is one of the companions of Saint Breage. According to legend, Germoc was Ireland’s king, whose day of feast is May 6. Historically, the primary landowners of the town were the Godolphin family, who are the dukes of Leeds.

Landmarks/Attractions

Germoe is home to many landmarks and attractions that are worth visiting. In fact, they are sites that are frequently visited by both local and foreign travelers. They include the following:

The Germoe Parish Church – this is built during the 14th century on the site of an earlier Norman church. It has a nave, chancel, south transept, north aisle, and a 3-stage battlemented tower of granite ashlar. Here you will find 3 long-tailed monkeys carved on the porch, which are said to ward off evil. There is also a Godolphin family pew in the north aisle and a small medieval building in the churchyard wall, which is known as St Germoe’s Chair.

The Pengersick Castle – this structure is of medieval date and features one of the few towers of its kind preserved in the UK. The ghost of John Milliton, who was high sheriff of Cornwall, is said to haunt the castle. Legend says he attempted to poison his wife, who switched the goblets with him, causing both of them to die. However, historical research has proven this story to be false.

Newtown Farm Bed and Breakfast – this accommodation is known to offer a warm and friendly welcome to guests. By staying here, you can rest your head after a day of exploring and engaging in fun activities.
