Flower Delivery to Newcastle with Clare Florist

Newcastle, County Down is a small town in Northern Ireland and as of the 2001 census; the town had a population of 7,444 people. Many people will be aware of the town due its position on the Irish Sea coast, close to the foot of Slieve Donard, which is one of the mountains of Mourne. This area is a popular tourist destination and there are a number of luxurious beaches in the area. Another key factor in the popularity of this resort is the fact that it plays host to the Royal County Down Gold Club and the town is located within the District Council of Down.

The town has been actively promoting itself as an “activity resort” in the north of Ireland and its location at Slieve Donard is a massive attraction for many people. There has been a great deal of investment made in the town, helping to bring the local area up to a greater standard, allowing it to be seen as a modern day tourist destination.

The town is officially classed as a small town under the Statistics and Research Agency in Northern Ireland, which is because the population falls between 4,500 people and 10,000 people. From the 2001 census, 23.5% of the local population were aged 16 years or younger and a further 21.7% of the population are at least 60 years old. The population at that time was split into 47.4% males and 52.6% females.

The town received a major accolade back in 2007 when the newly installed promenade was recognised with a number of major and national awards. One of these awards was the Civic Trust Award, which is presented for Excellent in Public Realm. One of the major events the town has hosted in recent years is a Halloween festival which includes a fancy dress competition and concludes with fireworks.

There was a local railway station, Newcastle Railway Station, which initially opened in March of 1869 but which closed down in May of 1955. The railway station still exists and has a B1 listing, with its notable red brick façade being a notable local landmark. In 2015, the building is used as a supermarket while the local community is served by public conveyance vehicles organised by Ulsterbus. This provides a link to Belfast as well as other small towns in the wider area.

While the golf course and the mountain range dominate the tourist attractions for many people, there are many other places of interest in the local community. Many guests come to visit Widow’s Row, which is a terrace consisting of 12 houses, which were constructed by public conscription after the storm of 1843 led to the loss of 46 fisherman, creating a number of widows and orphans in the local community. There is also the Murlough Nature Reserve, located close to Newcastle and before you reach Dundrum, and this area, with its rugged beaches and sand dunes, is a National trust site.
