Flower Delivery to Abbeytown by Clare Florist
Also known as Holme Abbey, Abbeytown is a village in Cumbria , England. It was built around the former Cistercian Holmcultram Abbey, the nave of which is now the parish known as St. Mary's Church.
The village is located on the main Wigton to Silloth road, and has a small number of local amenities such as a pub, post office, and a shop.
The buildings located in the village were mostly built during the medieval period, particularly those associated with the former abbey.
Abbeytown is also located on the edge of the Solway Coast area of outstanding natural beauty. The Cumbria Coastal Way also passes through the village.
History and Background
The village sits on agricultural land that was once owned by the monks of Holme Cultram Abbey. Abbeytown suffered from the heavy hand of Scottish Border Reivers, just like the Abbey itself.
The area is comprised of flat, marshy land, and because of this, water dykes and drains had to be constructed in order to reclaim the area for cultivation. Local farms were able to grow barley, oats, potatoes, and rye.
Abbeytown also provided excellent pasture for horses and cattle. There was also a weekly market and two fairs each year where livestock were traded. Sheep were grazed for the very lucrative wool trade and salt was also mined from the sea.
When the original Abbey fell into ruin after the dissolution of monasteries in 1536, many of the villages used the Abbey's stones to construct buildings. However, the church of the abbey remained as a refuge for those who were victims during border raids.
Notable Structures
The church that was used as refuge is now called St. Mary. It is a red sandstone structure that underwent restoration in 1703 and many years after that. However, on 9 Hune 2006, local youths set fire to the abbey, and restoration work continues to be done.
