Flower Delivery to Eaglesfield, Cumbria by Clare Florist
Eaglesfield is a small settlement and agricultural village in West Cumbria. Getting there includes taking the A5086 road, which is 2.5 miles southwest of Cockermouth, an ancient market town in the Borough of Allerdale. It is believed that the first element of the village’s name was derived from Eccles, a Brythonic term for church. During the early middle ages, Eaglesfield lay within the British kingdom, Rheged.
This quaint village, with its pretty fields of colourful and vibrant Eaglesfield flowers, is home to some very notable people. They certainly placed the village in the history books. Who are they?
John Dalton FRS (6 September 1766 – 27 July 1844) He is a famous theoretical scientist, chemist, physicist, mathematician and meteorologist, who founded the atomic theory. The research in colour blindness is also credited to him that is why it’s sometimes referred to as Daltonism. St Phillips, a church located a mile east of Eaglesfield, Cumbria, is called the John Dalton Memorial church.
Fletcher Christian (25 September 1764 – 20 September 1793) He was the man behind the Mutiny on the Bounty that broke out aboard the British Royal Navy that was sailing to Tahiti. It was set against the then captain, Lieutenant William Bligh. It wasn’t really clear what caused the mutiny, but based on some accounts, it was brought on by either the captain’s alleged treatment of his men or the sexual opportunities and the good life that the Pacific Island of Tahiti provided the sailors. Well, Christian did marry a Tahitian.
Robert de Eglesfield (c.1295-1349) No, he doesn’t own Eaglesfield, despite the similarity of his family name to that of the village’s name. Due to his family’s many land and property acquisitions, including the local manor, they took the name of the village as their own. Who he is, however, is the founder of The Queen’s College, Oxford in 1341.
