Flower Delivery to Roa Island with Clare Florist

Roa Island is located in the county of Cumbria, on the northwestern portion of England. It’s about one kilometre south of the village of Rampside, and located at the southern point of the Furness Peninsula. It’s considered one of the Islands of Furness and flows over three hectares. It comprises part of the Barrow-of-Furness for administration purposes.

There’s only about one hundred people living on this island, and it’s considered the 16th most populated island in England today. Roa Island is connected to the main portion of the country today, but in the past it was a real island that was only accessible by a boat. Changes started being made in 1847.

Even though this village is small, it has a yacht club and a cafe. There used to be the Roa Island Hotel that had been built in 1849, but is now used as a residence. It had originally been called the Pier Hotel.

There is a ferry that will take travellers to Piel Island. The Villa Marina overlooks the sea. This house was built for H.W. Schneider who used it as a holiday home. He was an industrialist in the region. This house has had many uses over the years, including as a fisheries investigation laboratory, and army premises during WWII. Today it serves as a hotel. The hotel has preserved the seven cannon that are located on its lawn, which face in the direction of the sea.

Roa Island was purchased in 1840 by John Abel Smith, who was a London banker. He had the causeway built to the mainland, as well as a deep water pier for the steamer industry. This pier connected the Furness Railway line with Furness Abbey and Kirkby. The railway line had been meant to transport supplies only, but in 1846 a passenger line was started.

There were many disputes over the years between Smith and the Railway line. The Railway line decided to begin their own steamer service to Piel Pier, but after further disputes moved their operations over to Barrow. Eventually it was moved back to Piel Pier and the Railway agreed to purchase a lease so they could operate in all of Roa Island. They got a great deal on property, as a bad storm caused extensive damage to the pier.

In 1891 the Pier was removed and the area filled in. The railway ran until 1936. Today if you look closely you can see that some of the causeway was built with track stones from the former railway line. Today there is a road built over what was once the railway line.
