Flower Delivery to Ruabon, Wales with Clare Florist
Ruabon (Welsh: Rhiwabon) is not your typical ancient village. It is in fact a historical place teeming with modern entertainment despite its rustic charm. The name is a blend of two Welsh terms "Rhiw" that means "hill" and "Fabon" that comes from St. Mabon and refers to a Celtic church.
The village, home to famous Ruabon, Wales flowers, was once a highly industrialized location due to its rich deposits of iron, coal and clay. Although the centuries-old chemical industries of Ruabon may not be as progressive as they were before, the village remains a stronghold for brick and clay works. No wonder that Ruabon is sometimes called "the town built on red bricks" due to the success of Henry Dennis' tile company.
History
Ruabon's earliest settlement dates back three thousand years in the Bronze Age. A construction work in the town centre sometime in 1898 revealed a funeral Cist or stone urn with cremated human remains aged 2,000 years BC. In 1917, another set of human remains with some ancient tools used for trading was excavated from a playing field of Ruabon Grammar School.
The early settlement in the area continued through to the Iron Age at the Y Gardden Hill Fort, which dates back to 400 BC. The Fort stood 585 feet above sea level with a strategic view over the surrounding area. The well-built Fort used to house a substantial settlement until the Roman invasion in 55 AD.
Landmarks
The old parish of Ruabon constructed in the 7th century was believed to be initially dedicated to St. Collen being mentioned in the Valuation of Norwich in 1254 as the Church of Collen in Ruabon. The church was subsequently rededicated to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, and renamed St. Mary's Parish. A new church of Cheshire-design built in the 14th century replaced the old parish, and was consequently restored twice in 1770 and in1870.
The ancient Y Gardden Hill Fort overlooking the village is surrounded with rounded ditches of Iron Age construction. What once was a flourishing ancient settlement is now clad in blooming flowers in Ruabon, Wales.
The Wynnstay Arms Hotel is among the many houses named after the influential Wynns family who were major landowners in the area for several centuries. Sir Watkin Williams, who inherited the Wynns properties later commissioned the construction of the hotel to replace the original estate. The hotel is situated right across St. Mary's.
Ruabon Grammar School was initially called Endowed Grammar School built in the early 17th century near the church but was subsequently transferred to the outskirts near Mill Farm and was henceforth called Ruabon Grammar School.
