History
The manor of Lytchett was held by a Danish lord called Tholf until the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The name is derived from the Brittonic “litchet” meaning “grey wood.” William the Conqueror granted the manor to Hugh Maltravers who was the feudal overlord when the Domesday Book of 1086 was recorded.
The Maltravers held the manor for around 300 years. The Black Death significantly reduced the population of the village and those who survived moved further up the hill. Eleanor Maltravers inherited the manor in 1376 and she married John FitzAlan, 1st Baron Arundel in 1359.
The Trenchard family bought Lytchett from the Arundels but they foundered around 1829 and the manor passed to the Dillon family. However, that family didn't occupy the manor and left the village in the latter part of the 20th century. The estate passed on the Hon. Geoffrey Beck who is a descendant of the de Carterets of Arundel in 2005.
The village of Lytchett Matravers has developed from a settlement of scattered villages to one with a moderate high housing density.
Attractions
Here are the attractions in and around Lytchett Matravers:
St Mary the Virgin – a Church of England parish church located ¼ mile north-west of the modern village. The church was built on the site of a village that was abandoned in the 14th century. Today, the structure is Grade I listed.
Purbeck Hills – E.M. Forster wrote in Howards End: “If one wanted to show a foreigner England, perhaps the wisest course would be to take him to the final section of the Purbeck Hills, and stand hi on their summit, a few miles to the east of Corfe.”
Corfe Castle – its distinctive outline can be seen from the hills. This castle was shaped by warfare and about a thousand years old.
