Flower Delivery to Sixpenny Handley with Clare Florist
In the Cranborne Chase Area of Natural Beauty lies the charming village of Sixpenny Handley. Devastated after a great fire in 1892, the village was rebuilt with many well-wishers sending in clothing, particularly waistcoats. That generosity was celebrated when the Sixpenny Handley Waistcoat Festival was held in 2014.
History
Despite money being in its name, Sixpenny Handley actually derives its name from two medieval hundreds: Sexpena and Hanlega. Both hundreds were united as the Hundred of Sexpenne et Henle in the 14th century.
The village is known by many names. One of its first names was simply Handley. It is also called Handley St Mary, with the current Sixpenny Handleybeing adopted in the middle of the 19th century.
Attractions
Sixpenny Handley sits 75 to 95 metres above sea level on the dip slope of Cranborne Chase's chalk uplands. Also a civil parish, Handley covers three valleys – all of which drain south.
Located on the B3081, the village is a popular stop-over on road trips. Other than that, walkers and stargazers are drawn to the area because of its isolated position.
It's also not that difficult to spot flowers in Sixpenny Handley. You don't have to go very far to see bluebells growing in Garston Wood, a hazel coppice and RSPB reserve.
Of course, the varied landscape of Cranborne Chase is a must-see attraction. Venturing to the boundary between Dorset and Wiltshire gifts you with some of the most stunning scenes you'll ever see. You will be treated to Breeze Hill with its rounded summits and Melbury Beacon, a prominent hill offering views of Blackmore Vale.
Other than Cranborne Chase and Garston Wood, you can also visit Martin Down, a chalk down land and National Nature Reserve.
Countryside scenes and Sixpenny Handley flowers aren't the only treats when in the village. A 14th-century church calls the village home, the Grade II* listed parish church of St Mary. The structure is located in an untrimmed churchyard, part of the Living Churchyards project that aims to foster native growth and wildlife.
Events
A number of events take place in Cranborne Chase. These include the Great Dorset Steam Fair, Larmer Tree Festival, and the Cranborne Chase AONB Woodfair. You will see the village so full of life during these festivities.
An annual fireworks display is held at Church Farm Campsite close to Guy Fawkes Night.
Nearby Attractions
Six miles away from Sixpenny Handley is the village of Chettle where the red-brick Baroque mansion Chettle House designed by Thomas Archer can be found. Other nearby attractions include the late 15th-century stone house Little Clarendon and the 14th-century Old Wardour Castle, now a ruin but once one of the most daring and innovative homes in Britain.
