Flower Delivery to Castle Douglas with Clare Florist
Castle Douglas is a town located in the council area of Dumfries and Galloway, in the southwestern part of Scotland. It’s located in the eastern part of Galloway. Habitation in Castle Douglas dates back to prehistoric times, with evidence of crannogs, or artificial islands, located in this region.
Located directly north of Castle Douglas are two Roman forts. One was built during the invasion of Agricola, who was a Roman general responsible for the conquest of Britain. The second was built by Antonine, who was one of the Roman emperors during the Nerva-Antonine dynasty of 96 AD to 192 AD. Both of these forts were to house cavalry units and villages were built around them. Around 160 AD they were both abandoned.
Threave Castle—built in the 14th century—was where this area was run by the “black earls of Douglas”. A small group of cottages was built on the shores of Carlingwark. Here marl, rich with calcium carbonate or lime, could be found, which was made into a soil conditioner for farms. Today you can still see these cottages as you head up to Castle Douglas. They are called “The Buchan”. Threave Castle can also still be seen in ruins.
In 1745 a military road was built through this region by General Wade. It travelled through Carlingwark and improved transportation through the region in the 18th century.
In 1792 Castle Douglas became official, being founded by William Douglas. He was a wealthy descendant of the Douglas Family, made rich by American trade. He planned the town on the Carlingwark Loch shores.
Castle Douglas was built according to modern grid plan, very similar to the newer portions of Edinburgh built at that time. William Douglas was also responsible for creating a lot of the industry in the town. Cotton Street has been named after its hand-woven cotton fabric and products.
During WWII evacuated children were sent here first, before finding them safer places to live. Castle Douglas was also the base for the 92nd Loyals Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment.
The Castle Douglas and Dumfries Railway line was built in 1859, bringing residents and custom in from surrounding villages and towns. It shut down in 1965, but the A75 trunk road was built to bring commuters to and from the town. Today the town still has a thriving market, located in a vast market space. The town also enjoys a thriving tourist industry.
Tourists and residents can enjoy a nice walk around the park, which is beside Carlingwark Loch. They can follow Lover’s Walk to the south side to see a bird-filled marsh sanctuary. There are many other trails to choose to return to town or to Threave Castle, which also has lovely gardens. This is run by the National Trust for Scotland.
