Flower Delivery to Kirkgunzeon with Clare Florist
Standing on a loop of minor road toward the north of the A711 from Dumfries to Dalbeatti is the village of Kirkgunzeon. As a result of this, only those who actually want to visit the place come over. In some ways, it is viewed as a good thing as the rural tranquility of the village is preserved. So if you intend to spend a romantic holiday, Kirkgunzeon might be a good choice. And if you do, don't forget to get some flowers in Kirkgunzeon to present to your date. If you can't, there's always the option to send flowers to Kirkgunzeon.
HISTORY
The name of the village is quite unusual as it sounds Cornish rather than Scottish. While “kirk” is common, meaning the village got its name from an early church that stood there, the rest of the name seems to be derived from Guinneain, a Gaelic variant of the name Finnian.
LANDMARKS & ATTRACTIONS
There are a couple of interesting sites in Kirkgunzeon and the towns close to it. Whether your interest lies in history or the outdoors, there's lots of fun stuff to occupy your time with when you're in town.
Here's a sample of what you'll experience:
Bridge over the Kirkgunzeon Lane – the lane is actually a river and there are a few streams across Dumfries and Galloway called “lanes.” A possible origin for that is the Gaelic word lean which means marshy meadow. The stone bridge was built in the early 1800s and is situated in the heart of the village.
Kirkgunzeon Parish Church – built in 1790 and is presumably close to the site of the original church dedicated to St Finian. The church is dominated by a red sandstone memorial to Robert McWhire. According to the inscription, he was a merchant in Halifax, Yorkshire who died in Dumfries on 4 November 1831. It isn't known what his connection to Kirkgunzeon was.
Corra Castle – the remains are located close to the west bank of Kirkgunzeon Lane. All that is left today is the stump of the tower which sits in a farmyard. The castle is mostly remembered for being a temporary refuge for Mary Queen of Scots during the flight to England which ended in her imprisonment and execution.
Camp Sites and Caravan Sites
If you like the outdoors, there are a couple of options for you. Also, should you want to make the outing a romantic one, don't forget to get some Kirkgunzeon flowers for your date.
That said, here are some of the possible sites to spend your time in:
Mossband Caravan Park – a small, friendly park that serves as a great location to explore Dumfries and Galloway.
