History
The Cumbric language was once spoken in the region and the village’s name means “bridge-head” in that language. A couple of notable people have lived or were born in Penpont and these include:
Sir Hugh Steuart Gladstone – a civil servant and ornithologist. He was Lord Lieutenant of Dumfries and lived at Capenoch House, which is located in the village.
Joseph Thomson – a geologist and explorer born in the village. Thomson’s gazelle is named after him.
Andy Goldsworthy – a sculptor who lived in the village since 1986. He has a workshop in the area and a lot of his works can be found in the surrounding countryside.

Penpont Bridge. This is a two-arched stone bridge built during the 1760s after the presbytery of the village raised money to cover the cost. Construction began in 1774 and it was completed in 1778. Today, the bridge is a Category A listed building.
