History
A landowner called Richard Oswald of Auchencruive – who as estates in Ayrshire – was convinced in the 1770s that coal could be mined at Southerness Point. He bought land in the area then developed a model village comprised of single-storey cottages near the shoreline. It was presumed he brought miners to live in those cottages to find coal. The reasons for Oswald believing there was coal in the area is unclear but the mission was a failure.
Major Richard Oswald, a descendant of the previous Oswald, paid for the construction of a golf course located on the family estates at Southerness in 1946. An architect called Philip Mackenzie Ross designed the golf course and it was completed by 1947. Today, the golf course is rated as one of the best in Scotland.
The golf course was just one of the many leisure developments that soon cropped up in Southerness. In 1954, the Paul Jones Hotel opened and was named after John Paul Jones who is hailed as the father of the US Navy. By the 1970s, a large holiday park was built and soon another caravan park followed with other leisure and amusement developments following soon.
Attractions
Southerness is a mix of the old and the new. As you drive towards the village, you'll immediately be captured by the beauty of the holiday park, golf club and other developments. Then, as you walk from the village car park to the shore, you will be greeted with much older cottages (this is if you're on your way to the lighthouse).
One of the oldest structures you will find at Southerness is Wreaths Tower which is located at Cowcorse. It stands by a minor road about two miles north-west of the village. This structure is all that remains of a house built by the Douglas family in the 1500s and was part of the estates owned by James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton.
The Southerness Lighthouse is a highlight when you're in town. It was used as a beacon for shipping in the Solway Firth and is the second lighthouse built in Scotland. While no longer in use, it does serve as a landmark in the area.
