History
Formerly a centre of cotton manufacture, Catrine was built around one of Scotland’s first cotton mills by Claud Alexander of Ballochmyle in 1787, with the help of David Dale. The original plan of Catrine shows a hamlet consisting of 11 buildings, which include a corn mill and a metal workshop. The factory was purchased by Messrs James Finlay & Co (MJF). in 1801, and in the following year, 2 artificial lochs that covered 120 acres of land were built above Muirkirk to supply the cotton works. About two decades after, the business experienced a large growth when extensive bleaching works were added.
Today, Catrine has become a picturesque village, where the site of the former bleaching works of MJF is now occupied by Glen Catrine Bond, who is in the business of bottling vodka and whisky, and marketing them under several brand names.
