HISTORY
Hurlford used to be a railway junction and this is mentioned in the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland: “...with a station on the Glasgow and south-western railway, at the junction of the Newmilns branch, 2 miles ESE of Kilmarnock...” The village also used to be a mining and foundry town and this is also mentioned in the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland: “...it is he seat of extensive ironworks of the Eglington Iron Co. (1846), as also of a worsted spinning-mill and of large fire-clay works, whilst in the neighbourhood are many collieries...”
The village of Hurlford used to be part of Riccarton, a former barony that was associated with the Wallace clan during the time of William Wallace. Industries the town include whisky blending and bottling, as well as the manufacture of clothing.
