Flower Delivery to Epsom Downs by Clare Florist
Epsom Downs is a well known area near the market town of Epsom. Located within the county of Surrey, it is home to a racecourse solely dedicated to horse racing. In this article, we’ll be learning a little bit more about the interesting features that this place has.
The Downs possessed chalk downland turf. The quality of which was discovered to be suitable for creating a racecourse. Initially, the races here ran a four mile course and lasted all the way into the afternoon. However, a group of rich racing enthusiasts sought to reduce the length of the course. They pioneered the orbicular, a semi-round course used in modern day racing. All these developments led to the creation of the famous Derby Day. Also known as the Epsom Derby, this annual event is named after the 12th Earl of Derby. Putting a ring or wreath of flowers from Epsom Downs on the winning horse was probably practiced even then.
The gallops are part of the land bought by a certain Stanly Wootton in 1925. The area was originally intended for horse training, but is now open to cyclists and model aircraft flyers. It is also popular with ramblers. Panoramic views of London and Epsom Downs flowers like lady’s bedstraw are just some of the things walking groups here look forward to.
Everyone who uses it is subject to the specific bylaws. For instance, those who wish to fly miniature planes should be members of the Epsom Downs Model Aircraft Club.
DERBY DAY
In its heyday, the Epsom Derby attracted about 250,000 spectators. Epsom Downs Station, which opened in 1865, brought thousands of race goers to these meetings. Some years after, housing developments were also initiated so visitors would have a comfortable place to stay in. The aforementioned figure has gone down in recent years. Televised broadcasts of the match are said to be the root cause of this.
Still, nothing beats being on the grounds on race day. There’s no substitute for the excitement of watching your favoured steed as he zooms past you on the stands. Apart from the parade of excellent thoroughbreds, this event is also a great excuse to people watch.
The fair is also a fun addition to the races. Visitors are provided with a variety of rides to choose from, including swings and roundabouts that are popular with children. There are also numerous stalls that sell anything from delicious snacks to budding blooms. You don’t need to have someone send flowers to Epsom Downs!
