The Jacobean era is important in both the history of England and Scotland. This period coincides with the reign of the James VI (1567 – 1625). The Scottish monarch also inherited the English crown in 1603 and ruled as James I.

Audley End House is a 17th century country house in Essex County. It’s located just outside the market town of Saffron Walden in the Uttlesford district. Once a palace, it’s now a third of its original size. However, it’s still large and hold varied collections of interest within.
HISTORY
Audley End stands on the former site of Walden Abbey, a Benedictine monastery. In 1538, the property was granted to Sir Thomas Audley, the Lord Chancellor by Henry VIII. It was then converted into a domestic house for him and named Audley Inn.
Later on, the house would be demolished by Audley’s grandson, Thomas Howard, Lord Treasurer and the first Earl of Suffolk. In its place, a much grander mansion was built.
When Charles II bought Audley End for £5, it was already on a palatial scale. The said king used the place when attending horse races at Newmarket. It was eventually returned to the Suffolks in 1701. The house was gradually demolished to its current size in the century that followed. Much of these changes were introduced by Sir John Griffin, first Baron of Braybrooke.
Today, the immense residence is in the stewardship of English Heritage. It also remains the family seat of the Lords Braybrooke.
