Lying within Essex , Billericay is a town and civil parish with a significant historical interest. The history in the town can be traced back to the Bronze Ages with different places around town bearing traces of occupation during the ancient years.
Two of the most popular periods in its history were the Tudor and Georgian eras. Today, Billericay is known for its historic sites as well as a range of attractions meant for the entire family.
HISTORY
The burial grounds in Norsey Wood are evidence that the area was occupied during the Bronze Age and Iron Age. There has also been evidence of Roman occupation at other locations.
During the Middle Ages, pilgrims passed by Billericay on their way to Canterbury. A lot of the inns present in the town can be accounted on these voyagers spending the night. The most notable event during this period was the defeat of Essex rebels by King Richard II's soldiers at Norsey Wood.
Billericay is also said to be the town where the Pilgrim Fathers met before they boarded on the Mayflower. There is also lots of evidence to prove this given that many establishments were named Mayflower.
A lot of excellent examples of Georgian houses were built during the Georgian era in Billericay. One of these still stand today, the Burghstead Lodge in High Street.
During the 20th century, Billericay played a part in the First World War as one of the German Zeppelin airships was shot down in an aerial battle over Billericay. St. Andrews Hospital housed the Regional Plastic Surgery and Burns unit from 1973 until it was transferred to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford. The original building that it occupied has been redeveloped into housing.
