Flower Delivery to Ovington with Clare Florist
Ovington is a tiny village located in Essex county in the southwestern region of England. While the county is located closest to the sea, the village is inland. There are actually five different Ovingtons in England, to further confuse matters. The population of Ovington, Essex is small, less than 200 people. Ovington is five kilometres from the village of Clare, Suffolk.
Ovington has its own church, St. Mary’s Church, and a few residential properties. St. Mary’s church is a small building, with narrow tower and red roof. It’s partially hidden by a hedge that runs along the road. The church is still used by the community, and is a popular location for local celebrations. On Christmas Eve, their “Carols by Candlelight” fills up the building.
Beside the town is the Ridgewell Airfield, part of which is still in use today. It’s used for gliders and military training exercises. During WWII it was used by the Royal Air Force and the USA Army Air Force. Most of the buildings and control tower have since been torn down, and the land restored to agricultural use. Some of the exterior plane tracks are now used as village roads. The Essex Gliding Club purchased some of the land, and they use this region for their plane gliding during the summer months.
There is a memorial dedicated to the people who lost their lives during a bomb loading accident in June 1943. This monument is located on the old perimeter track at Ovington.
The town has a mention in the Domesday book of 1086. Ovington was part of the lands that were given to Roger Bigod by the King William I. Roger Bigod was a man who was a Norman knight. He came from a line of knights in Normandy, and settled in England. His name is also shown in records at Roger Bigot. It’s believed he fought at the Battle of Hastings, which was why he was awarded land in Essex. Bigod received over twenty-four acres of land. Most of this land consisted of meadows. The total value of these lands in 1086 was four pounds. He held six lordships in Essex.
There has been confusion over whether he had one or two wives, but most likely they were the same woman, with different spellings of her name recorded: Adelaide/Alice/Adeliza de Tosny/de Toeny.
Roger Bigod died in 1107 and there was some confusion over where his body was to be buried. He was buried in Thetford Priory, which had been founded by him. But the Bishop of Norwich stole his body and had him buried in the new cathedral in Norwich, where he remains.
