Flower Delivery to Pollokshaws with Clare Florist
Pollokshaws is located in the southside district of the large city of Glasgow, in Scotland. Many of the homes here are made from sandstone, with tower blocks, and modern brick tenement-style buildings. The last census count in 2001 was 4295 residents. Residents are mostly from the working class and middle class. There is also a large south Asian community located in the district.
During the 1600s, there was a village called Pollokshaws. The main industry was weaving. Flemish weavers were brought in by the landowners, the Maxwells of Pollok, as they were the most talented in weaving skills and could teach town folk. Pollakshaws remained a burgh, or town, until 1912. During this time it became a part of the City of Glasgow.
Pollokshaws remained an industrial area until about 1957, when the “Comprehensive Development Area” act decreed that it was to be completely torn down and rebuilt. This is when the first tower blocks were built. Today, the current Shawbridge Corridor regeneration plans to tear down many of these towers to build new ones. New district plans include building a mix of social and private housing. These old tower blocks are immortalized forever in “The Detonators” documentary film.
The Pollok Country Park has a relaxed and peaceful setting for residents to enjoy. The land for this park was originally donated by Sir John Stirling-Maxwell. He was the tenth baronet of Pollok, KT and a Scottish Tory and philanthropist. He was also the founding member of the National Trust of Scotland, and realized the importance of preserving Scotland’s green spaces.
Many notable people have lived in Pollokshaws, including John MacLean—socialist and Scottish nationalist, Alex Norton—actor, and Bobby Evans—Celtic footballer.
There are many architecturally interesting buildings in this region, including the Eastwood Parish Church, built in gothic style, and the Shawlands United Free Church, now known as Destiny Church. There are some double “S” symbols built into the framework of a window, but no one knows what they might mean, other than representing the first initial of the church’s name. This church was built in phases between 1888 and 1893. It was designed by John A. Campbell, and built with a pale colored Giffnock sandstone.
Pollakshaws has two main parks, the Pollok F.C.’s Newlandsfield Park, and Pollok Country Park. Newlandsfield Park has easy access to the Pollokshaws East Railway Station.
In 1954 The Pollokshaws Bowling Club has been playing regularly in the Pollok Country Park, and the club itself has existed since 1854. The Bowling Club was honoured during its 150th anniversary by a civic reception in the Glasgow City Chambers.
The Pollokshaws district has the Pollokshaws Heritage Trail for residents and visitors to enjoy outdoor activities. This trail has many notable attractions, including old buildings and businesses.
