You can even take your partner out for a day of fly fishing. If so, don't forget to get them some flowers in Eastleigh to surprise them with. HISTORY

The current town of Eastleigh lies on an old Roman road which was built in AD 79 between Winchester and Bitterne. Roman remains have been uncovered in the Eastleigh area, including a Roman lead coffin that was excavated in 1908. This indicates that a settlement existed in town during the Roman times.

A village called East Leah, which is of Saxon origin, was recorded to have existed since 932 AD. “Leah” is an ancient Anglo-Saxon word which means “a clearing in a forest.”

The Domesday Book of 1086 offers a more detailed account of the settlement and is referred to as “Estleie.”

The London and South Western Railway Company built a railway from Southampton to Winchester in 1831. By 1898, that railway was transferred to Eastleigh.

In 1868, the villages of Barton and Eastley were merged into one parish. A parish church called the Church of the Resurrection was built in the same year. Author Charlotte Yonge, who contributed towards the building of the church, was tasked with giving a name for the new parish. Yonge chose Eastly, but with a new spelling: Eastleigh.

The village has seen rapid and controlled expansion in residential, industrial and commercial sectors over the years.
