Flower Delivery to Exbury Gardens – A Popular Garden in Hampshire, England
Belonging to a branch of the Rothschild family, Exbury Gardens is an informal woodland garden covering 200 acres. There are lots of flowers in Exbury Gardens including large collections of azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons. Considered the finest garden of its kind in the UK, Exbury features the national collection of Nyssa (Tupelo) and Oxydendrum under the plant collection scheme run by the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens.
HISTORY
In 1919, English banker Lionel Nathan de Rothschild purchased the Exbury estate. Soon after buying the property, he set out to create a garden on a grand scale. The garden he visualised featured a water tower, three large concrete-lined ponds and 22 miles of underground piping.
Today, Exbury is open to the public for most of the year. The peak seasons to see Exbury Gardens flowers are during spring (for flowering shrubs) and autumn (for fall colours). Although the property does include Rothschild's house (which is a neoclassical mansion), it is not open to the public.
Exbury Gardens is run by a registered charity called Exbury Gardens Limited with objectives “to maintain, improve, develop and preserve Exbury Gardens in Hampshire, including opening to the public, and to advance horticultural science, knowledge and learning for the public's benefit.”
FEATURES
Lionel de Rothschild was a keen collector of plants. In particular, he liked azaleas and rhododendrons and Exbury is a reflection of those. Rothschild also liked making hybrids and his gardens are filled with his creations.
During the summer months, the Exbury Steam Railway is in operation and takes you on a journey across the pond in Summer Lane Garden, along the top of the Rock Garden and into the American Garden. You can use the train ride as an opportunity to spend with someone special. Even better, why not send flowers to Exbury Gardens to surprise them?
The summer months also offer the perfect opportunities for picnics (you'll be next to ponds with carps and dragonflies) and riverside walks. This is the month where hydrangeas are at their peak and exotic plants add attraction to the Herbaceous Borders. Waterside maples, sweet gums, dogwoods and the National Collection of Nyssa and Oxydendrum all make summer in the gardens a worthwhile visit.
Spring offers a wonderful array of colour thanks to blooming azaleas, bluebells and rhododendrons. But even before that, the gardens are awash with colour thanks to primroses, daffodils, camellias and magnolias.
