Flower Delivery to Frogham with Clare Florist
Frogham, Hampshire is a small village that sits approximately 1.8 miles northwest from the town of Fordingbridge in Hampshire’s New Forest National Park. Fordingbridge lies 81 miles southwest of London and 10 miles south of Salisbury on the banks of the River Avon. The Avon Valley Path passes through the former market town.
Fordingbridge Museum has several local history exhibits, and there is a Roman-era villa nearby which is open to summertime visitors.
Frogham itself sits on a plateau that overlooks the heaths of the New Forest to its east. The New Forest includes some of the largest remaining areas of unfenced pasture land, heaths and forests in southeastern England, the most populated part of the country.
The New Forest was originally created by William I in 1079 for his royal hunt. He created the forest by taking over at least 20 small hamlets and many isolated farms. It was called “new” in his day because it became a single area.
In the 18th century, the New Forest supplied timber to the Royal Navy and plantations were created within the Forest just for this purpose. Over 4000 oak trees were lost in the Great Storm of 1703. Today, approximately 90% of the New Forest is still owned by the Crown.
The New Forest encompasses large areas of lowland habitats that have been lost elsewhere in England. These include valley bogs, wet and dry heaths, deciduous woodland and alder carr. As a result, the area is profuse in rare wildlife and provides visitors with historic opportunities to view remarkable landscapes.
The ponies, cattle and donkeys of commoners still roam the open health and woodlands, as their grazing maintains the open character of the New Forest. They often come into the Forest villages, so shop keepers and homeowners must shoo them from the gardens and shops.
The New Forest pony is an indigenous horse breed of the British Isles and a famous attraction of the New Forest. Frogham, sitting at the crossroads to other New Forest settlements of Hyde, Blissford and Stuckton, is an ideal place to visit old-style New Forest England.
The hamlet is first mentioned in records dating from the early 14th century. The village is legendary at a centre for smuggling into the 18th century, as well. An ancient roadside well, called “Abbots Well,” gives fresh, clear water to people and animals who peek below the surface covering.
Every year, Frogham hosts the traditional Frogham Fair in August near the Frogham crossroads. The fair is a fundraiser for local charities and the Memorial Hall. Entertainment includes horseback gymnastics, crafts, local produce, raffles, terrier racing, a vintage car display, and the traditional wheelbarrow race up steep Blissford Hill.
