Hawley first appeared in written records in 1248 in the Compotus de Crundal where its name was spelled in various forms such as Halely, Halle, Hallee and Hallegh. In documents related to the Foundation of the Chapter of Winchester AD 1541-1547, the village's name was spelled Hallie and Halley.

The name of the village is taken from the Old or Medieval English Healhleah or Healhaleah which means “clearing or meadow of the nook(s).”
