Hursley is a relatively small village in Hampshire in the southern part of England. This is also a civil parish which according to the last official census has a population of 838. Hursley is located right in the middle between the city of Winchester and the market town of Romsey.

Although many historians and archeologists agree that this area was inhabited for millennia, the first written document about this village dates back from the 12th century when the Bishop of Winchester built a manor house here. This area was owned by the Bishop of Winchester for centuries, but in the middle of the 16th century it was given to king Edward Vi. It is also interesting to mention that Hursley was home to several members of the Cromwell family. Oliver’ Cromwell’s son – Richard Cromwell – lived here for 10 years. Another famous family, the Heathcotes lived here for more than 150 years. In addition, several other notable people lived here including the famous theologian and poet John Keble and Dennis George Wyldbore Hewitt VC a veteran from the World War I. In the present day, Hursley is known as a place where IBM has a large facility that employs more than 1.500 people.

Hursley has a nickname and many people in this region call it the Village of Chimneys because of the interesting chimneys used on the houses in this village.

All Saints’ Church

This church was built in the 13th century, but the modern version that we see now was work of John Keble who supported the reconstruction of the church in the middle of the 19th century. There are of course many pieces left from the original church like the foundation of the tower. There is also a memorial in the churchyard in honor of the aforementioned Dennis Hewitt VC.

Farley Mount

This hill is one of the highest points in this region and it is located only a couple of miles from Hursley. It is part of the Farley Mount Country Park. This is the place where people can enjoy nature and visit a monument dedicated to a racing horse.

Sir Harold Hiller Gardens or simply Hiller Gardens is a beautiful arboretum situated few miles out of Hursley. It includes more than 12.000 taxa and 42.000 trees and covers an area of more than 72 hectares. These gardens are part of the Register of Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England since 1997.
