Sway, with a population of around 3,450, is a village in Hampshire and it is found within the New Forest National Park. This is a civil parish that was created back in 1879, when a large area of land was removed from the Boldre parish. There are a number of amenities and facilities on offer in the village, and most importantly there is a main railway station offering travel to Bournemouth, Weymout, Southampton and even London Waterloo station. Sway is found in the south side of the New Forest and the area was the inspiration for much of the setting in the book The Children Of The New Forest.

Sway can be dated back to Anglo-Saxon times and the name is derived from Old English, meaning noisy stream, which this name referencing Avon Water. There have been a number of discoveries of implements dating from the Stone Age and Bronze Age. Sway is listed on four separate occasions in 1086 Domesday Book, making this an area of particular local importance.

One of the most notable attractions in Sway, is the church of St Luke, which was built back in 1839 and a number of parishes have been formed over the years to take advantage of this church. The railway was introduced to Sway back in 1888.
The area saw some action during the Second World War when an emergency landing ground was set up at the southern end of the village and the ground was used by aircrafts, providing a safer place to leave them overnight in comparison to Christchurch. However, this area was soon found by the Germans and was repeatedly bombed in 1941, before the site was closed.

For many people, Sway is most notable for the Sway Tower, which was built in the late 1800s and is a Grade II listed building. Its alternative name, Peterson’s Folly, owes to the fact that it was built by Andrew Thomas Turton Peterson and it was inspired by a number of follies that Peterson had seen during his time in India. The tower was built as a mausoleum, although its initial intention of having a permanent light at the top was refused down to the fact that it may have confused ships. The tower was also built as an advertisement and testimonial for Portland cement, which at this point was not fully accepted.

In the northern section of Sway, there is a lot of woodland and heathland areas. There is also a lot of acid grassland, scrubs and even a valley bog. All of which means that Sway plays host to a great array of wildlife, making it a perfect destination for anyone looking to learn more about creatures and seeing them in their natural habitat. There is a lot to be said for being a bit more hands-on with nature and this natural setting is ideal for anyone looking to interact and engage with wildlife in its natural habitat.
