The village of Whitsbury forms part of the group of villages located on the edge of the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is located close to Fordingbridge, a town and civil parish near the Dorset and Wiltshire borders. Whitsbury features a straggling village street lined with timbered and thatched houses.
HISTORY
The Domesday Book of 1086 doesn't have a listing for Whitsbury. It is, however, listed as Wiccheberia in the 12th century.
It is said that Whitsbury belonged to the Kings of England from 1274-1275, until the tie of Henry I who granted it to Reading Abbey. However, other accounts state that Henry I gave the manor to Godfrey de Vilur who then gave it to the abbey. That said, it's confirmed that the manor belonged to the abbey during the time of Henry I.
The manor was leased in 1540 for 21 years to Anthony Cotes after the Dissolution of the Monasteries; Cotes was a tenant of the abbot. Five years after, Richard Morrison was granted the manor and after he died in 1556, his son and heir Charles succeeded him. Charles' son, Sir Charles Morrison, 1st Baronet, succeeded his father and created a baronet in 1611. He later sold the manor to Sir John Cooper, 1st Baronet of Rockbourne in 1623. From that point forward, the manor descended with Rockbourne.
