Flower Delivery to Braughing with Clare Florist
Braughing is a small village of 850 people, and is located in Hertforshire in southeastern England. It’s directly above London on the map, and is located between two rivers, Quin and Rib. Braughing was a rural district from 1935 to 1974, before the area built up. Braughing is also a civil parish.
The history of Braughing can be dated back to the Mesolithic, Neolithic, and bronze ages, as human activity has been noted from these times. Actual settled human habitation is believed to have begun around the Iron Age, in 3rd century BC. The village was likely a trading post, as people could boat in from Rib River, and also the larger River Lea.
During pre-Roman times, Braughing may have been the capital of the Trinovantes, the major Celtic tribes. The Kings Addedomarus and Tasciovanus may have had there seats in this village.
During Roman times, there used to be a town that was near Fort Bridge. This town was close to all major roads. This includes Ermine Street which became the A10, Stane Street which is now the A120, and Icknield Way. The town covered about thirty-six hectares, and was a large production centre for the making of Roman pottery. It’s still not know what the Latin name of the town was. Today, when the River Rib is flooding, it churns up bricks, tiles, and other artifacts from the original Roman settlement.
The Anglo-Saxons settled into Braughing after the Romans did. The Old English name for the town was Breahinga. It’s believed it was named after their leader Breahha. In the Domesday Book of 1086, the village was named Brachinges.
Each year, the village celebrates “Old Man’s Day” on October 2nd. This story dates back to October 2, 1571, on a funeral day for young Matthew Wall, a local farmer. His fiancee and villagers were deeply distressed by his passing. As they carried his coffin to the funeral service, a pallbearer slipped, causing them to drop the coffin. From within the coffin, they heard frantic knocking. Upon opening it up, Matthew was found alive and well.
Apparently he had epilepsy and suffered from a coma. The following year he married his bride and lived for many more years. in 1595, he passed away. In his will, he gave provision for Fleece Lane to be swept each year, the funeral bell rung, and then a wedding peal to be rung. Some of the money was also invested in Braughing Parish Charities. His grave was pegged with brambles so it wouldn’t be damaged by the local sheep.
The tradition of Old Man’s Day continues today. Schoolchildren are responsible for sweeping the leaves from the lane. Besides the funeral and wedding bells being rung on his day, there is also a short service held at his graveside.
