Flower Delivery to Buntingford in Hertfordshire with Clare Florist
Buntingford is a thriving market town in the East Hertfordshire district in England. It sits just along the River Rib and the Roman Road Ermine Street. Because of its strategic location, the town has grown to be known as an ideal staging post with lots of coaching inns. Although it is the smallest town in Hertfordshire, Buntingford is actually home to some 5,000 people.
The town of Buntingford was first mentioned in the books in 1185. It was said to be one of the lands owned by the Knights Templar. But it was only in 1253 that it was referred to as an official town by Henry III. This announcement led to the town holding weekly markets and annual fairs. Just with these traditions, prosperity followed shortly.
In 1863, the Buntingford Railway Station opened and the town became a popular stop-over for those heading to London or Cambridge. Although it was closed in 1964, the town’s status as a staging post still did not fade away and so, trade continued going and businesses went on entering and exiting.
What is interesting about Buntingford is that it is home to lots of beautiful Georgian and medieval buildings. One such is the Buntingford Almshouses.
Buntingford Almshouses
The Almshouses is located in the Buntingford High Street. It was owned by the famous mathematician and astronomer, Bishop Seth Ward. The Almshouses was erected in 1684 and was originally called the Ward’s Hospital.
Buntingford Manor House
Another important building in the small town of Buntingford is the Manor House. This was originally the home of the person who once owned Buntingford. Located between the Barclays Bank and the Crown Public House, the Manor House is now being used as a Heritage Centre where detailed history of the entire town is made available.
The Red House
The Red House is located opposite the intersection of High Street and Norfolk Road. It is a Queen Anne style house that was built sometime around 1710. The Red House is popular today because it was once home to artist and designer Claud Lovat Fraser who designed much of the town’s memorial areas. Today, the Red House is listed as a Grade II building.
The Cage
This is perhaps the most intriguing structure you can find in the small town of Buntingford. Built in the 1700s, the Cage is a tiny jail house frequently used to imprison criminals for some periods of time. Drunkards that commit misdemeanors are the usual suspects trapped in here. Today, the Cage is undergoing renovation under the order of the Civic Society and Town Council.
The Layston Court Gardens
Originally, the Layston Court Gardens formed part of the Layston Court House built in the 15th century as the Buntingford Grammar School. However, today, it is now being used as a leisure area where visitors can relax and enjoy the sights of beautiful flowers in Buntingford.
The Layston Church
Near the town is the St. Bartholomew’s Church. It is an old structure surrounded by woodland and wild Buntingford flowers. Although the church itself is currently undergoing restoration, visitors can actually still enjoy the surrounding greens nestling the ancient edifice.
A tranquil vacation spot that offers travellers unique shopping experience – that’s Buntingford.
