Braunstone is the largest city parish located in the district of Blaby in Leicestershire, England. It has a population around 15,000, containing a large council estate that was detached in 1935 to become part of the county borough of Leicester. It has existed as a community in the Saxon times, its name meaning “Brant's tun” and at different events the flowers in Braunstone bring a beautiful image of this small town
The History
The earliest dated proof of existence is a Bronze Age axe dated around 1000 BC, with history recordings about the Roman road from Leicester to the High Cross near Sharnford. Vikings had also contact with the local area, since there are viking origin names like Enderby, Kilby, Cosby and many others. Braunstone is also mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, having a population of seven people : “two socmen and five villains”. The city prospered during the 18th century, then in 1820s it was a known area for fox hunting and the population increasted from 238 in 1921 to 6,997 in 1931 due to the estate transactions done. During World War II, Braunstone was used for agricultural use in the war, evidence being the Memorial Gardens that were used as a military camp.
Attractions
The Braunstone Hall is one of the oldest buildings which used to be the center of a country estate passed on through the Winstanley family starting 1776. At first, it was designed to be a functional house and not very fashionable, using red bricks and common materials. Next to the house the had the stable where the wealthy family kept the carriages and horses, with a farm close to it also. The walled garden once used to contain fruit trees, but everything had changed in 1930 when the Winstanley estate was bought by the Leicester Corporation, turning into a school.
Another local attraction is the St Peter's Church, located in the Braunstone park. It was mentioned the first time in 1168, having the architecture from the existing church dated earliest in the 12th or 13th century. Built of limestone and consisting of a short tower, the building was re-footed in 1867 with few improvements in the 20th century. The church was originally Norman, but it has been repaired so many times that it has lost its origins. In 1937 the church was extended on the north side so that it can make room for the new inhabitants coming from the Leicester estates.
